The Australian Tax Office does not need to be immediately notified when you change your name.  Your name change will be registered by the ATO on your next tax return.  However if you prefer you are still able to notify them of your new name in any case.

You can change your name over the phone with the ATO by calling 13 2861.  They will ask questions to prove your identity, including:

• Your date of birth
• One of your business, residential, post or e-mail address
• Your bank account number (not your BSB)
• The sequence of numbers from a recent tax assessment number
